Cannabidiol (CBD), the chemical compound extracted from hemp and cannabis that is low in tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), is now a multi-billion dollar business. Holistic practitioners are using the organic substance to treat a raft of ills from depression to inflammation, as well as for pain and sleep management. Now, an Illinois-based CBD startup has won an award for elevating the nascent industry’s standards. “Consumers should know that not all CBDs are created equal,” says Inesa Ponomariovaite, the founder and owner of Nesas Hemp. “Some CBD brands label their products as ‘all-natural’ even if government lab tests have proven they are not, while some misrepresent the concentration of CBD on the label.”

Nesas specializes in CBDa, or cannabidiolic acid, because of its unique properties.
“CBDa extract acts on key brain centers with 1,000 times the potency of CBD oil,” Ponomariovaite observes. “Also, the body can absorb CBDa up to 11 times more effectively than CBD.”

Quality Matters
While the FDA has approved just one CBD-based medication so far — for epilepsy — it has recently issued several warning letters to brands making medicinal claims and/or selling substandard CBD products.
“As in any young, high-growth industry, there are a lot of profiteers in CBD right now,” Ponomariovaite says, adding that customers should be careful when they buy. FDA lab results have found the presence of harmful substances in some CBD products, while some other products have been found to be entirely synthetic. These can cause serious side effects, including nausea and high blood pressure.
